Saw Box Set

What would you do if you woke up not knowing where you are, how you got there, and found yourself chained to a pipe? This is precisely the situation two men found themselves in with the hit American-Australian horror film Saw. Created in 2004, the movie directed by James Wan has plenty of thrills, shrills and horrific images that will leave one haunted.

The movie revolves around two men that are chained in a rundown industrial bathroom. Each is given a microcassette recorder that has instructions of how to escape. As for those instructions, one is told he must escape the bathroom while the other is told to kill him before a certain time or his family will die.

In the middle of the two men is a dead man that is loosely clutching a hand-held tape player and a handgun. While there is a hacksaw in a toilet, it stands no chance of actually cutting through the chains. The result is two men attempting to free themselves as they are the latest victims of the Jigsaw Killer.

The movie then goes back in time to chronicle previous sick and ferocious murders of Jigsaw including Amanda. With this victim, a mask is hooked to her lower jaw with the key to unlock it inside her cell mate’s digestive tract, who lies paralyzed. She does the unthinkable to get the key just in time to free herself from the gruesome mask trapping her.

The numerous flashbacks show how Jigsaw never actually kills his victims, but finds ways for each victim to kill themselves or those around them. Within Saw, police detectives frantically investigate, search and attempt to apprehend the mastermind behind the sick and twisted game.

The movie stars Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, Monica Potter, Michael Emerson and Ken Leung. It first screened on January 19, 2004 at the Sundance Film Festival and received rather positive reviews. From there, it was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 18, 2004. However, it made its big debut with theatrical debuts on October 29, 2004 in the United States.

It was first rated NC-17 because of its strong, graphic violence that was incredibly vulgar. It was then slightly re-edited and released with an R rating. However, it maintained a large portion of its gore with numerous gruesome scenes most notably the scene that unfolds at the end.

Despite the gore and horror, critics favored the movie and praised its stylish visuals. Many called it “chilling,” “terrifying,” and absolutely “thrilling.” All and all, Saw was a financial box office success.
